a) I am not so sure on what we really are supposed to be doing here.
b) But I guess I will give it some sort of shot.
c) This is only a rough draft, therefore it is not as long as I would like for it to be.
So the Maumee River is important. Why? Honestly why would something that barely anyone knows about, matter so much to so many people but no one out of Toledo or the surrounding areas even knows about it. The Maumee River is vital to Toledo, without this river the city of Toledo would not be the city it is today. Toledo was built around the river, and having this river connect to the great lakes serves as a way of income, transportation, and recreation for northwest Ohio.
But to many people when they hear Maumee River they ask themselves “what is that?” or “who’s mommy?”. But to northwest Ohio-ians they see this river as a source of drinking water, a place where many jobs are formed, and a place rich with history.
This history of this river affected Ohio and the country of The United States as it is today. The Maumee River has held a key in many historic battles in the fight for the United States. Commodore Perry won a victory for the United States against the British on Lake Erie, right by Putt-In-Bay.
But why you ask. Why is it important to know the past, Its is important to know the past so we can save it now for the future. Without saving and preserving this river for the future all of the stories, memories, and history will be lost forever. Then surely no one will ever know what the impact the Maumee River actually had on the United States.
Wether you are a environmental guru, a history buff, a water sports fiend, a Toledo-ian, or just a visitor we should strive to save this historical place.
Writing op-eds are hard i agree
But you’ve definitely gotten a good start at it. I like the fact that you say all the “stories, memories, and history will be lost forever.” I think this really grabs the attention of the reader and shows how much the river affects the city and state.
Centered straight in between all the major controversies surrounding the river. Right now, the Maumee is working towards where the Cuyahoga was in the 70′s. As it it such a major shipping lane for most of Toledo’s major industry, do you think that the government should act with our tax dollars, or the companies themselves be responsible for repairing the damage that industry has done to it. Also, consider detailing a few actual major issues affecting it.
Howdy!
it might be a good idea to state that somewhere for those of us who failed geography and asked where ‘mommy was’…also what do you mean by “worth saving”? is it being destroyed, is it justed littered are they building a dam? whats happening with it? you made great comments on how we should save it and gave many examples why, but i would stress whats happening and how it needs to change.
intresting op-ed the only comment i have to leave is that im from southern-ohio and and i have no fricken clue where this river is
so this is cool, rivers are important and fun to be around. i dont know if a lot of people lke to swim in it but rivers that are cool enough to swim in are so much fun.
